By popular request, I am going to take you through a day in a life of me ๐
Around 7:30 I wake up and wander into the kitchen to mix myself my morning drink:
I get dressed for the day (or not, sometimes I spend the morning in pj’s), and spend about 30 minutes lifting weights (this is after a nice warm-up, of course. Never lift weights when your body is cold!)
Breakfast Time! Today’s breakfast was some grain-free bitter chocolate pancakes with thawed frozen strawberries.
And a cup of decaf hazelnut coffee to drink throughout the morning.
And my vitamins!
Then I sit down to the computer to work. Homework, blogging, blah, blah, blah…
My sweet doggy comes to say hello! So I give him some love…
11:30 Lunch! Finally! I usually eat a veggie-protein stir-fry or leftovers from dinner the day before. Today happened to be a eggplant-tempeh mix with indian spices.
Then I’m off to tennis practice. I leave at 12:30 and arrive around 1:15. I spend the 45 minute car ride reading.
Tennis for 2 hours (This changes throughout the week. Sometimes I do 2 hours of tennis+1 hour speed and weight training. And sometimes I do just 4 hours of tennis.)
And 30 minutes of speed training with leg strengthening.
Post-workout snack:
4:30. My late afternoons and nights vary greatly from day to day. Sometimes I have to string a racquet, work on more homework, or whatever errands I need to do!
Shower and Dinner. After sweating so much throughout the day, I finally rinse off. Then I eat dinner. Something is usually waiting in the crockpot. Tonight’s diner was a big spinach salad with quinoa, tomatoes, chicken, avocado, heart of palms, and olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
Monday night is choir night for me. From 6-8 I sing my heart out!
I’m hungry again, so I have a little dessert…
Then I settle down with a good book ๐ And drink my nightly drink before bed:
10:00-Lights out! Night, night…Don’t let the bedbugs bite!
Thought-provoking, mind-prodding question of the day:
Do you like to keep schedules?
I always like to schedule my day out the night before or else I get lost the next day and don’t know what to do! I find that I always get more done when I schedule everything out.

I love these kinds of posts to see how everyone is so different and interesting! Just curious, are you in college? When do you go to classes? Also, what kind of tennis team are you on? Is it through school or do you practice that much on your own?

Hi Kate!
Great questions that I should answer…I guess I don’t really talk much about my personal life on my blog ๐
Actually, I am in high school-homeschooled. I do all my classes online or with tutors-it works really well. So I get all my homework/schooling done in the morning and do all my tennis training in the afternoon.
As for tennis, I have been playing since the age of five. My sister and I train basically everyday with a coach and others like us who aspire to play tennis in college or go pro. I am training to get my college payed for ๐ I play USTA tournaments most weekends. It is kind of like an organization with different regions and rankings and everything….
So, yep! That’s me ๐
kate says
oh thats so interesting to learn! do you enjoy being home schooled? Is your main reason for being home schooled because of your focus on tennis?
spoonfulofsugarfree says
I LOVE being homeschooled! I went to regular school up until 7th grade, then went half and half for two years, and then became fully homeschooled. I travel so much with tennis, and workout so much that it would be impossible for me to go to regular school and train. So yes, that was one of the main reasons.
Kelly says
Thanks for the background…I was wondering the same thing! You seem very mature for your age!
spoonfulofsugarfree says
haha…thanks!

I like schedules because then I always know if I can fit something extra in and what I am doing next. It looks like your days is structured but relaxed. I wish I had more of a consistent schedule but college life makes it different most days!! Singing and classes are pretty much constant daily activities though!
spoonfulofsugarfree says
You sing, too? Fun fun!
But I know what you mean with daily activities changing. I try to keep it in a certain order (like school in morning, tennis afternoon), but what I do during those times differs greatly.
Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen says
I LOVE Jane Austen…I read every single one of her books my senior year of high school because she was my “author study.” Pride & Prejudice and Emma are my favorites…if you haven’t read those and you like Sense & Sensibility than you MUST read those next. ๐
spoonfulofsugarfree says
Ok! This is my first Jane Austen book….I read Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and loved that, but haven’t read any Austen’s….

This is a great post!! I love reading schedules and stuff. I’m a very orderly person–at least I try to be. I feel so much better when I have a schedule and stick to it. It feels like chaos when nothing in my life is planned. Yay for homeschoolers. ๐

I love schedules. I run on them because my days are so busy, and if I don’t, nothing will get done [I get distracted a lot]. All these foods look delicious! I cannot wait for that bar recipe.

Alex, you are so pretty! And you seem like the sweetest girl. I am homeschooled, too and my schedule is soo similar to yours! I loved this post, you are awesome!
Are all your siblings homeschooled? How many hours do you spend on schoolwork in a day and how many hours on the computer?
I think my mom has some Jane Austen books laying around the house that I just haven’t read! Now I’ll be sure to read them ๐
spoonfulofsugarfree says
Hi Kayla!
I have one brother and one sister, and they are both homeschooled. I usually spend about 4-5 hours a day doing school work (and pretty much all of those hours are on the computer….blech, I know!)
A lot of people having been telling me how great they are! I just started the book, so I am not that far along yet….

How interesting! So when do you graduate? Keep us updated on your scholarship status! ๐
P.S. You look so beautiful in the choir picture.
spoonfulofsugarfree says
Hi Maryea!
I will graduate next Spring…but I am starting to look at colleges now! I pretty much have it narrowed down to 3 or 4….so I am visiting with coaches and professors this spring and throughout the summer. Hopefully I will sign with a team by this fall ๐
Thanks for the sweet comment ๐

How old are you? Aren’t you in high school? Your home-schooled? How do you find that socially?
Are you a star tennis player!? I had no idea you spent that much time at it! And you are so healthy! I’m inanely jealous…;) – especially since I stay up till midnight every night and eat – and up again early. Blah. I know I need to change but I can’t…
spoonfulofsugarfree says
Well…..I turn 17 this Thursday ๐ But, yes I am a homeschooled high schooler. Socially, I am perfectly fine. I keep in touch with my friends from school, and I have lots of friends from playing tennis everyday and every weekend. When I play tournaments, I get to see new people each week, and I develop relationships with them. There are also about 10 girls I train with every day.
Haha…I’m definitely not a star! I just train and play everyday-it’s good exercise, a lot more fun than running on a treadmill, it is fun to be competitive, and it is a game I can play until I’m 90 years old!
And…haha….you can change if you want to! The mind is an amazing thing…no worries!
Have a great day ๐

Alex,
You’re so pretty. ๐
I didn’t know you were home schooled. We talk about doing that for Summer, and the more I learn about it, the more I want to do it for so many reasons.
Loved seeing your full day of activities and eats. I loved every meal…except for that morning drink. Hehe, Garden of Life’s Perfect Food left me gagging when I tried it. I’m impressed you can handle that first thing in the morning. Your 7-layer bar sounds much better. ๐
spoonfulofsugarfree says
Hi Heather!
Thanks for the sweet comment ๐
Personally, I feel that homeschooling is a lot better than regular school. I went to public school for 8 yrs in a state that had one of the best public schools in the country, but I still feel that I am getting a much better education with homeschooling. I can go at my own pace, and fully understand everything learn. I am a couple years ahead of schedule, which is fantastic because I can work on college level course to get some credits out of the way.
My brother started homeschooling in 3rd grade, and I think it is better for him. There are so many distractions at school, and he wasn’t the best at staying focused ๐
The rest of my family thinks I’m crazy, too. They all take the green tablets instead!
Nicole @ Of Cookies & Carrots says
Um, you are beautiful!!! Seriously, what eyes ๐ This was such a fun post to read too… You are QUITE the tennis player! As someone who lacks physical ability/sports-related talent, I am impressed ๐
can’t wait for that 7 layer bar!
spoonfulofsugarfree says
Thanks Nicole! You are so sweet ๐ And I think I will be posting the recipe on Wednesday….so stay tuned!
Marty says
Alex, what is the L-Glutamine for? Love Natural Calm!
spoonfulofsugarfree says
Hi Marty!
I take L-Glutamine to protect my muscles and intestines. Since I workout so much, I ned it to prevent my muscles from breaking down. When you workout, the Glutamine levels in the body can reduce by 50% and your body will start to eat at your muscles for fuel. The extra glutamine protects them.
Also, It can help the strengthen the tissue in your gut. I was have problems with digestion and other stomach issues, and this helps so that my body won’t eat away at my intestine’s lining.
Hope this helps!
P.S. I love natural calm, too! Helps me sleep well ๐

Hi Alex, if you don’t mind, would you mind sharing why you take the supplements you do? I’ve heard of them but don’t really know their benefits. Thanks so much!

I like having a daily schedule – Yours seems so busy!! I can’t believe you are in HS…you seem so mature!
spoonfulofsugarfree says

I actually get that a lot….but age is just relative…
katie says
wow I read your blog a lot and had no idea about your homeschooling and tennis! I would love to learn more about the supplements you take in your morning and night drinks. would you ever consider doing a post on some of the benefits you have noticed since drinking them and some of the benefits that “supposedly” come from them also? Cannot wait for that recipe too!!!

Hi Katie! A few people have asked for this, and I think it is great idea! I’ll get to work on it ๐

spoonfulofsugarfree says
Haha! That is so funny!
At first I thought it was going to be really ugly, but as soon as I put it on I loved it! It is so soft and smooth ๐ And classy!
Kelsey @ Snacking Squirrel says
Alex,
I’m impressed that you use L-glutamine. I thought I was one of the few but it turns out it might not be as uncommon as i thought. I started supplementing with l-glutamine when i had leaky gut and it was a huge aid in healing my digestive tract. I should look at picking some more up soon since it works so well!
and i take similar morning supplements- vitamins and amino acids and D3 (which i need badly here during the winter months)
u are such a tennis junky- love that about ya! ive made it a goal to take up tennis this spring…ive lured my mom into the idea so we’re gonna try to make it a habit together.
btw i dont know how ur able to read during the car ride- i get so car sick whenever i read something.. just thinking about it makes me feel nauseous hehe.
mmm can;t wait for that dessert recipe!! im planning on making ur Grain-Free Bitter Chocolate Cake for One this afternoon. ive been eyeing it for awhile and cant get it out of my head- so its about time i make it!
XOXO <3
spoonfulofsugarfree says
Hi Kelsey!
I was having stomach problems, too (I guessed it was leaky gut, but never tested). It helped me a lot. And I really think that it has helped me keep my muscle mass, too. I can tell that my body isn’t using my muscles as fuel any more ๐
Vit d3 has really helped me out, too. I used to live in Iowa where it was cold and gloomy in the winter, and there was one year when I was sick all the time! I got my blood tested and it turned out that I was extremely deficit in vit d. It helps so much.
I’m so glad you are going to play tennis this summer! Let me know how it goes ๐ If you ever need any help-you can ask me!
Good luck with the bitter chocolate cake! Let me know how it turns out, and how you like the bitterness….
Alex

Both sides of my family are opposites when it comes to planning my mother’s mom plans EVERYTHING, and my dad’s parents don’t really plan much of anything. I want to live more according to a schedule, but I also want to be spontaneous and flexible. For now I am just experimenting, so I’ll let you know if I’m a planner or not in a while!

I was wondering how your family eats in comparison to you? Do you eat family dinners/ meals or do you eat your own meal? It is interesting to me because I was raised on an average american diet, considering I am one of 4 it wasn’t practical to be eating organic everyday.. but I took to an interest in eating very healthy towards the end of high school while the rest of my family eats fairly average (healthy compared to many many people though I’m sure). So just wondering if your family/ upbringing had an influence on your diet choices or you fell into them yourself.
spoonfulofsugarfree says
Hi Kay!
The rest of my family is actually very supportive about the way I eat. They all like to learn about health, but aren’t quite as extreme as me. They enjoy their desserts ๐ The one person in my family who probably eats the most like me, though, is my mom. She likes to try my healthy recipe experiments, and she enjoys most of them. But I never really had soda in my house, didn’t have sugary cereals, and we all were pretty interested in learning about health. I am just the “health freak” of the family, though!
Have a great day ๐

you ARE pretty and so nice as well ๐
spoonfulofsugarfree says
Thanks Emily! You are too sweet ๐
Patty says
Are you sure that’s enough food, given your activity level?
spoonfulofsugarfree says
Hi Patty!
Great question. I guess my post does not adequately describe exactly how much I eat every day. I eat approximately 2500 calories each day, and have found that it is the perfect amount for my body. I usually always take seconds and third helpings of everything, and I usually will eat a big scoop of peanut butter or two each day. I like to snack on nuts throughout the day to keep the calories up.
Thanks for the comment!
Erika says
I love the “day in the life” post! I never knew you played tennis! That is so cool! I played tennis for a few years when I was younger, but never really felt like I “loved” it so I stopped. 4 hours of tennis?! Wow, now that’s dedication! ๐
spoonfulofsugarfree says
Yeah….my dad was a tennis player, so he passed it on to my sister and me. We’ve been playing since we were 5 yrs old!

Ha! I take like all of the same vitamins/supplements as you, plus a few more! And I eat sugar-free, lower carb/grain…basically sounds like we have the same bodies!
spoonfulofsugarfree says
You eat sugar-free and (mostly) grain-free, too?! Too cool!! Do you find that you feel so much better?

where do you get your glutamine from?

Tanya,
I buy mine at a local health food store in powdered form. You can also try online at shops like iHerb or Swanson vitamins.
